Red Sox fans boo Healey, Wu at home opener
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu faced boos from more than 36,000 fans during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park. The Democratic politicians walked the field before the Red Sox home opener against the San Diego Padres on Friday. The crowd response drowned out the event.
Video of the booing circulated widely on social media. Republican candidates for Massachusetts governor highlighted the moment. Brian Shortsleeve posted from the stadium, noting the loud jeers during the beautiful afternoon game. Mike Minogue shared footage with a comment that fans sought a change, while Mike Kennealy expressed support for Red Sox Nation.
Fenway Park hosted the traditional start of the Major League Baseball season for the Red Sox. Attendance exceeded 36,000 for the matchup.
Healey recently called on private airlines to halt flights aiding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportations. One of her aides faced arrest in October for cocaine trafficking linked to a state office. Wu has opposed federal immigration actions, accusing agents of unconstitutional operations in February and directing the release of related surveillance footage.
