Giants' Chapman mouths expletive at Schmitt after error
San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman appeared to mouth "Catch the f---ing ball" to first baseman Casey Schmitt after Schmitt dropped Chapman's throw in the fifth inning of a 7-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on April 1, 2026. The error at Petco Park allowed a runner from third base to score, extending San Diego's lead to 2-0. Both players were charged with errors in the game.
Chapman fielded a chopper from Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts with an off-balance throw that sailed high but remained catchable. Schmitt's dropped ball prompted a mound meeting where Chapman's frustration surfaced. Earlier, in the third inning, Chapman threw out Fernando Tatis Jr. attempting to score from third on a grounder.
The Giants fell to 2-4 with the defeat, continuing a rough start to the 2026 season. Chapman went 0-for-4 at the plate, while Schmitt finished 0-for-3.
Chapman and Schmitt addressed the incident after the game. "We're all brothers here. It's the heat of the moment," Chapman said. "I've already talked to Casey and it's all good."
Schmitt added: "That's my guy. He's always been in my corner and helped me out with everything. ... I should have caught the ball. We're good."
