Mary Lou Hamlin, mother of NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin, addressed the Gaston County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, urging additional funding for local fire department staffing, equipment and emergency response training following a Dec. 28 house fire near Stanley, North Carolina, that killed her husband, Dennis Hamlin.[1][2]
Dennis Hamlin, 75, died from injuries sustained in the blaze at the couple's two-story home, while Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, suffered severe burns and was transferred to a specialized burn center in Winston-Salem for treatment.[1][3]
"Dec. 28 was one of the saddest days of my life. It was the last time I saw my husband of 52 years when I pulled him out of our burning home," Mary Lou Hamlin said during her testimony. "In addition to losing my husband, I lost everything from my entire life."[1]
She highlighted a lack of water available to fight the fire despite fire trucks being on scene, advocating for budget allocations to improve fire protection in the area.[1][2]
Denny Hamlin, 45, drives the No. 11 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, where he has secured 55 career victories, including three Daytona 500 wins.[4][5]
Denny Hamlin's sister, Lisa Chapman, also spoke before the board, describing her arrival at the fire scene: "There’s nothing worse than pulling up to the house on fire and seeing everybody standing in the road. No water being thrown on the fire."[1]
Gaston County officials heard public comments during a regular board meeting; no immediate decisions on the budget requests were reported.[2]
