The NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, known as March Madness, began its first round on March 21, 2024, featuring 32 games across 16 regional sites in the United States.[1][2]
As excitement built around the single-elimination event involving 68 teams, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) posted a public safety reminder on X, incorporating basketball terminology.[3]
"It's March Madness — and blocking shots is part of the game. But blocking a fire hydrant? That's never OK," the FDNY wrote on March 21, 2024.[3]
The department highlighted that parking vehicles at fire hydrants is illegal in New York City and can delay first responders' access to water during emergencies, when seconds are critical.[3]
March Madness first-round games are typically held at neutral-site arenas, with venues such as UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, hosting sessions that year.[1][2]
