Mets radio broadcaster Howie Rose to retire at end of 2026 season

Longtime New York Mets radio broadcaster Howie Rose announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2026 Major League Baseball season.

Rose, who joined the Mets radio network in 1987 as host of the post-game call-in show Mets Extra,[1] shared the news in a video posted to the team's social media accounts. He currently hosts the pre-game show Mets First Pitch and post-game show Mets Extra,[1][2] marking his 40th season with the organization in 2026.

"Excited as always about the beginning of another Mets season. In fact, I've been blessed to be a part of Mets broadcasts in one capacity or another since 1987. And every season's been unique and significant in its own way. This year, though, will be especially meaningful to me because 2026 will be my final season in the Mets broadcast booth," Rose said in the video.

The 72-year-old broadcaster said the decision followed years of consideration and was influenced by a desire to spend more time with his wife, Barbara. He plans to call every Mets home game, games at Yankee Stadium and all postseason contests should the team qualify.[3]

Rose, who often emcees the opening day ceremonies at Citi Field, expressed hope that the season could end with a World Series title and a ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes.

"I'm always honored to start the season by MCing opening day at Citi Field, but this year in particular, I would like nothing better than to bookend that by serving as master of ceremonies on the steps of City Hall after a trip down the Canyon of Heroes immediately following the season," he said.[3]

Rose indicated he does not plan a full break from the Mets and may participate in select broadcasts in a to-be-determined capacity after 2026.
